CSV to JSON Converter: what to know
CSV to JSON converts comma-separated rows into a JSON array of objects, using the header row for the keys. It's built on Papa Parse, a well-tested open-source CSV parser, so quoted fields that contain commas, line breaks or escaped quotes are read correctly rather than split in the wrong place.
The delimiter is detected automatically, so files that use semicolons, common in spreadsheets set to European number formats, or tabs convert without extra steps. Blank lines are skipped.
CSV has no types: every value is text. An option turns plain numbers, true, false and null into real JSON types, but only when nothing is lost, so ZIP codes such as 02134 and IDs too long for a JavaScript number stay strings. Headers written as dot paths (address.city) can be rebuilt into nested objects.
Popular uses
- Turning a spreadsheet export into test fixtures or seed data
- Preparing CSV data for an API or a JavaScript app
- Converting reports for use in scripts
- Checking how a tricky CSV file is actually parsed
Tips for the best result
- Make sure the first row holds the column names; they become the JSON keys.
- Duplicate or empty header names make confusing keys; rename them first.
- Excel may save CSV in a legacy encoding; save as 'CSV UTF-8' to keep accented letters correct.
