JSON to XML: what to know
JSON to XML converts JSON into indented XML using fast-xml-parser, an open-source XML library. Object keys become element names, values become their text, and arrays become repeated elements with the same name, since XML has no array type.
Well-formed XML needs exactly one root element. If your JSON is an array or has several top-level keys, the converter wraps it in a root element; wrap it in a single object yourself, such as {"order": {...}}, to choose the root's name. Element names also have rules: they can't start with a digit or contain spaces, so JSON keys like "1st" or "first name" need renaming to produce valid XML.
Characters with special meaning in XML, such as & and <, are escaped in the output, so text values come through safely.
Popular uses
- Building request bodies for SOAP or XML APIs
- Producing XML config from JSON data
- Creating test fixtures for XML parsers
- Migrating data between JSON and XML systems
Tips for the best result
- Decide on a root element name before converting; it's the first thing an XML consumer checks.
- Rename keys with spaces or leading digits; they aren't valid XML element names.
- Check the target system's schema (XSD) for element order, which JSON objects don't guarantee.
