JSON to YAML: what to know
JSON to YAML converts JSON into block-style YAML, the format of Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions workflows, Docker Compose files, OpenAPI specs and Ansible playbooks. Braces and brackets become indentation and dashes, and most quotes disappear, which makes configuration much easier to read and review.
The conversion uses js-yaml, a widely used open-source YAML library. Strings that YAML would otherwise read as another type are quoted to keep them strings, for example "yes", "no", "on", "off", "null", "true" and number-like values such as "1.0" or "0123". That protects you from the classic YAML pitfalls, such as a country code NO turning into false in older YAML parsers.
Since YAML 1.2 treats JSON as a subset, the data you get back is the same. Key order is kept, so the YAML follows your JSON.
Popular uses
- Writing Kubernetes or Docker Compose config from JSON examples
- Converting API specs from JSON to YAML (OpenAPI)
- Making CI workflows from JSON output
- Preparing readable config for documentation
Tips for the best result
- YAML indentation must use spaces, never tabs; keep that in mind when editing the result.
- Add comments after converting: YAML supports # comments, JSON doesn't.
- Validate the final file with your tool's own linter (kubectl, docker compose config), since each tool has its own schema.
